Gainesville -- home to the University of Florida and its toothsome Gators -- understandably offers loads of ethnic and casual eateries along with selected options for fine dining. Downtown has an evolving cast of restaurants and nightspots within walking distance of most hotels, while the up-and-coming historic district near campus has bed and breakfasts leading the way in restoration for stately turn-of-the-century mansions built with boom-time wealth. Novelist Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of Cross Creek and The Yearling, lived just south of Gainesville. Tours of her homestead at the edge of a citrus grove (now a state historic site) include her writing space and kitchen where she cooked three meals a day on a wood-burning stove. Gainesville menus run the gamut from deli favorites and pizza to fondue and sushi.
